Shakira, the Barranquillera, the singer, the famous, the artist is much more than that, she is a whole political movement.
Here are three reasons why it should be considered one
1. Promoter of education: Shakira's commitment to education is her work with the Pies Descalzos Foundation. This non-profit organization founded by the songwriter has built schools in Colombia for children living in marginalized communities. The foundation also provides education, food and medical care to children in need.
2. Women's rights advocate: in 2010, she joined the UN's Mil millones en pie campaign. This initiative brings together more than one billion people in over 200 countries. Shakira has also been outspoken about sexism in the music industry and has been an important voice for gender equality in entertainment.
3. Cultural appropiation: Yes, it is clear that she is a great singer and songwriter, as evidenced by her worldwide hits and awards, but she has also used this tool to promote cultural diversity and unity, as for example, some of her worldwide hits such as the "waka waka" World Cup song in 2010, or "La bicicleta", which promotes a whole Colombian cultural landscape beyond international eyes.
Of the latter, we have recently witnessed the whole process of her breakup and separation from an ex-partner, and how from the music, she has appropriated from self-love, the role of mother, and the inherent rights of women and children. During these days, her ex-partner has made comments about how the offspring of her - Shakira - there generated many comments and criticisms about him.
Ultimately, he insinuated that because she is a Latin American artist, her fans do not dispense with an education and so it was more possible to insult.
Something funny about Latin Americans, is that we are very patriotic, we share a brotherly relationship, we can get on each other's nerves, but we will never let someone from outside point the finger at us. That is why, after the ex-football player's comments, the singer published on her social networks, how proud she feels of being a Latina, and all Latin Americans joined in.
A wave of retweets, tweets, repost and comments has generated a whole movement of patriotic character, cultural identity, diversity and totally a political movement of sisterhood and unity.
Undoubtedly, since the beginning of her career, Shakira has been a passionate advocate for women's rights and education, and a great artist worldwide. She has used her music and her platform to spread important messages and has worked hard to promote meaningful change in these areas.
